Central Kitsap—Josh Sontag 4, Steffan Collins 12, Jacob Sontag 17, Maurice Brown 3, Michael Thomas 7, Bryce Cox 2, Kerricho 10, Ty Luna 12.

BremertonAndrew Shadle 11, Michael Lawrence 2, Marshall Stevens 2, Andre Coleman 20, Virgo Banks 14, Isaiah Wesby 12, Tyler Grisham, Tim Pounds 2, Kevin Almen, Shaq Jones 6.

Virgo Banks gave his basketball coach a debut he’ll never forget.

“That one will go down as one for the books,” said Darren Bowden, who coached his first game with the Bremerton Knights on Friday night. “That was fun.”

Banks banked in a 3-pointer to tie the game with about 49 seconds remaining and then hit a pair of free throws with 1.2 seconds left to give the Knights in an improbable non-league rally against the Central Kitsap Cougars, 69-67.

“He was telling us all week that he wanted to win his first game at Bremerton High School,” Banks said. “That’s what I gave him.”

Banks capped a big rally from the Knights, who trailed most of the second half. With about five minutes remaining, the Knights trailed by 12 points. Over the next two minutes, they chipped four points off the lead.

The final three minutes were all Knights.

Bremerton ended the game on a 12-1 run. CK helped the rally along with seven turnovers as Bremerton turned up the defensive pressure. “It’s been a problem that we’ve had all year is taking care of the basketball,” Central Kitsap coach Scott McMinds said.

Banks’ 3-pointer tied it at 67-67. Central Kitsap’s ensuing possession ended when Andre Coleman — who scored a game-high 20 points — came up with a steal under the basket and called timeout with 19.9 seconds remaining.

Bremerton’s shot at the other end didn’t go down, but Banks came up with the rebound and threw up a shot as the buzzer sounded. After conferring, the officials put 1.2 seconds back on the clock and sent Banks to the line. He sank both.

“It’s exciting,” Banks said. “It’s just like a state game.”

“He’s just been scrappy all week,” said Bowden, referring to all drills in practice.

And Bowden, a longtime South Kitsap assistant coach, can celebrate his first game.

“I’m going to call my dad and talk about how we came back and won,” said Bowden, whose father Mel coached at Prosser. “It’s very memorable.”

The Cougars fell to 0-3. The first two losses were blowouts against Tacoma schools.

McMinds found a few silver linings in the loss. Rebounding was better as was the defense.

But McMinds said there could be some changes when the team takes the court against North Kitsap on Monday.

“I think we competed,” McMinds said.
