The Bremerton Knights celebrated Senior Night with a 64-47 win over the Sequim Wolves at Eathorne Gym, and completed an undefeated season in the Olympic League.
With the win, the Knights finished undefeated in Olympic League play at 14-0, and 19-2 overall. It’s the Knights’ first Olympic League championship since 2014. Last season, they had to share the league title with the Wolves, before defeating them in a tie breaker playoff to decide the No. 1 berth to districts on their way to the Class 2A state title.
“It feels wonderful,” said coach Miah Davis. “It’s an honor to do it for Bremerton, being part of that coaching realm. It feels we accomplished something. We teach young men how to be men, but at the same time, we also want to win. With winning comes discipline, sacrifice; and all these sacrifices, you have to teach these guys how to play the right way.”
They played the right way against Sequim, though the Wolves didn’t make it easy. Though Bremerton led 32-10 early in the second quarter, an expected blowout never materialized. The Wolves kept it competitive, but couldn’t mount any comeback threat.
Junior Davis-McWhorter led the Knights with 19 points, shooting nine of 14 from the floor. Jalen Davis scored 17 points, making 8 of 11 field goals, as he is still coming back from a knee injury that kept him out for most of January.
“He’s a Davis, he’ll be fine,” said coach Davis. “People expect him to play great every night, sometimes he most can’t have a night off or a bad night. But he’s still plays defense. That;s what we’ve been harping n the past week. At the end of the day, defense wins championships.”
Defense limited the Wolves to 15 first half points, as Bremerton led 34-15 at intermission. They led by as much as 28 points before coach Davis cleared the bench for the fourth quarter.
As it was Senior Night, Davis started his two varsity seniors, Tony Medina (9 points) and Mark Lomuda (2 points, 7 rebounds). But two other seniors, Neyo Young and Manny Esoroma, came up from the C-team, and got into the game in the fourth quarter. Young made a three-pointer late in the quarter that got the student section and the Knights on their feet, roaring their approval.
“We talked to the boys after practice,” coach Davis said. “There’s a reason why they were selected for this team. Neyo, he’s been with us the last four years. Guys like that, we can see their growth year by year, are the ones we love to have in our program. After they graduate, its no 0longer coach, it’s friend. It’s a blessing.”
The Knights will have least one week off before their next game, and have a bye in the first round of the Class 2A West Central District playoffs.
“I have a plan,” coach Davis promised. “I always got a plan. You’ll see what our plan is when we play.”
