The Kingston Buccaneers picked the worst time to play the Bremerton Knights.
Bremerton was coming off a two-point loss to Glacier Peak, a Class 4A school from Snohomish, in the MLK Day Classic at Seattle Pacific University on Monday. Though they played good defense in holding the Grizzlies down to their lowest point total of the season, they couldn’t find enough offense to pull out the win.
There were no such offensive problems against the Buccaneers as the Knights pummeled them 94-60 inside Eathorne Gym for an Olympic League win. With the win, Bremerton remained undefeated in league play at 9-0, and 14-2 overall.
Of course, leading scorer Jalen Davis was not there, as he’s still recovering from a twisted ankle he suffered against Eastside Catholic on January 3, but it seems that the Knights hasn’t missed a beat offensively with him on the sideline. Some of the games have been close in his absence, as the Knights have been accustomed to blowouts this season.
In the Kingston win, six Knights were in double figure scoring. Jr. Davis-McWhorter led his team with 18 points; Enoch Taylor added 17, Jay Beahan added 12 from the post, and Aaron Matthews 11. They also got points off the bench from Tony Medina (11 points) and Kaliam Hunter (10 points).
It was offense that was predicated on defense. But the Knights weren’t able to practice the day before their Martin Luther King Day game at Seattle Pacific.
“We had a day off and had to play,” coach Miah Davis pointed out. “It was a rhythm thing. We got into an offensive rhythm after that day. Defensive, we have some pinpoint things that we cannot do. Those bad habits will correlate to a bad scenario in the playoffs,
“We have to discipline ourselves,” he continued, where to help from, who to help, and not make it easy on teams. We have to focus in on March 7, and how better we can get to March 7.”
With Jalen Davis still out, the points are coming not only from the usual starters but also coming off the bench. In addition, to Medina and Hunter, Mark Lomuda put in eight points , and made some defensive contributions as well, pulling down a team high 13 rebounds, and blocked a pair of shots.
“We have so many weapons we haven’t used,” coach Davis said. “Teams are having a tough time adjusting to our bench.”
In that same token, it all comes down to defense. How much are we willing to sacrifice for the greater good. A good W is a defensive W. I don’t care if the score is 33-32 and we win. It’s not what they can do, it’s what we can do.”
The Knights will try to keep doing it Friday when North Mason comes to Les Eathorne Gym.
