POULSBO – Life without Jalen Davis seems to be pretty good for the Bremerton Knights.
When Davis twisted his right ankle on January 3 in a 78-61 loss to Eastside Catholic, fans and opponents wondered what the Knights would be like without their high scoring all-star guard. In the four games since that day, the Knights are still rolling through the opposition.
The latest was an 80-51 defeat of the North Kitsap Vikings in Olympic League play. The game was close in the first half, but Bremerton put the hammer down in the third quarter, outscoring the Vikings 26-9 to break open the game and take a 60-34 lead.
Aaron Matthews led the Knights (8-0 Olympic League, 13-1 overall) with 19 points and six assists, followed by Junior Davis-McWhorter with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Enoch Taylor with 11 points,
But as a coach, Miah Davis knows there’s still work to be done.
“It’s a collective. I think we’ll be fine offensively, but defensively, that’s my job. I’ll never lie to them about our deficiencies. We have to show a little more signs of ownership wen it comes to it.”
In their first matchup, Bremerton was rolling on both sides of the court, as they pummeled the Vikings 99-38 on December 19. This time, it was much closer to begin with, as all the games have been since Jalen Davis went out of the lineup.
The Vikings stayed even with the Knights for most of the first half, before Bremerton slowly but surely, pulled away decisively.
“Our goal is March 7,” said coach Davis, “it doesn’t matter how we get there. That’s strategically, physically, emotionally, mentally. We have to tap into all those aspects what it felt like at the end.”
Since Jalen’s injury, his teammates have stepped up their game in his absence on the court. Jalen was watching from the sidelines, as the Knights have increased their tenaciousness on the court.
“That’s what you should do for your brothers,” said coach Davis. “It’s unquestionable how they feel about each other in their brotherhood, it’s all family.”
Bremerton will next be in action on Martin Luther King Day, playing in the MLK Day Classic at Seattle Pacific University against the Glacier Peak Grizzlies from Snohomish.
“We still lot of stuff to work on defensively so we’re sound,” coach Davis said, “and make the other team’s life difficult.”
