A basketball game is four quarters long, and the Bremerton Knights girls played good basketball for three of them.
But the Lady Knights were shut out in the third quarter against the Kingston Buccaneers and that was the difference as they lost 52-41 in their Olympic League opener.
Bremerton was down 37-22 at halftime, though they were playing well against the Buccaneers at Eathorne Gym.
But in that third quarter, the ball didn’t cooperate with the Knights as some shots hung on the rim and rolled out. In all, they took 12 field goal attempts and none of them went in. They also committed eight turnovers against a swarming Kingston defense, and trailed 49-22 at quarter’s end.
“I feel that we had some quality shots but they just wouldn’t drop in that third quarter,” said Marshaun Thompson, who took over this season as head coach of the Knights. “It messed with the girls’ confidence, and a little frustration set in. But I’m glad they stayed resilient and came out in the fourth quarter and continued to fight.”
In that fourth quarter, the Knights found their offensive touch again, and scored 19 points, while holding the Bucs to a single free throw at one point. They were able to cut the lead to single digits with under a minute to go, before the Bucs hit a field goal that finally put the game away.
“They came out a lot a confidence, and a good attitude, energy and effort,” Thompson said of the fourth quarter.
Bremerton did as well as they did, despite coming into the game short handed. Two players were injured, another was ineligible, and three junior varsity players were called up to fill the roster.
One of the JV players, freshman Gracie Gregorson, led the Knights with 11 points. McKaela Robison and Eulanh King each added 10 points.
With the loss, the Knight fell to 0-3 on the season, 0-1 in Olympic League. The loss was also their 30 th overall dating back to 2023-24 season. Their last win was against Foss, a 54-15 blowout on January 10, 2024. Their last league win was a 60-33 triumph over North Mason on December 14, 2023.
The Knights will be looking to break that losing streak without thinking about it.
“That’s all you can do,” Thompson said. “If you give good attitude, good energy, good effort, that’s a win to me, even if the scoreboard doesn’t reflect that.”
