The Bremerton Knights celebrated Senior Night in their final home game of the season with a 67-39 win over Port Angeles. But no one had a bigger night than Luke Cichy.
A five-foot six senior guard, Cichy had mostly been playing on the Knights’ junior varsity this season. But on Senior Night, he had the biggest basket of them all. At least to him it was.
In the third quarter against the Port Angeles Roughriders, with the game already in hand, Cichy sank a three-pointer from the left side. It was his only points of the game but it brought his teammates and the crowd in Eathorne Gym to their feet, particularly his family who was in attendance.
“That was absolutely amazing,” Cichy said after the game. “Just to play in general, but to get that shot opportunity was absolutely amazing. The fact that I made it, made it a night to remember.”
“That was important not only for him but his family and our program,” said Bremerton coach Miah Davis. “I asked his dad before the game, ‘Is he enjoying himself?’ That’s what we try to do, create that sense of belonging. You want to be somewhere you belong and doing something that you love, every day.”
The only ones who won’t remember it will be the Roughriders, who the Knights routed 67-39 in the Olympic League game.
The Knights had a 54-14 lead midway through the third quarter, just after Cichy’s three-pointer, starting the mercy clock for the rest of the night. Only a 20-9 fourth quarter by PA made the score a little closer.
Bremerton’s other seniors, Frank Allen and Dallin Anderson, started for the Knights. Allen had 15 points and 10 rebounds,, and Anderson had four points. Sophomore guard Jalen Davis had a game high 17 points for Bremerton, who improved to 14-4 overall and 12-1 in league. They will finish the regular season on Monday at Sequim, as both games with the Clallam County teams were pushed back due to snow earlier in the week.
Bremerton led 29-8 after one quarter as they shot 12 of 14 field goals, and were 28 of 57 for the night.
“That’s how you’re supposed to shoot. Come Monday it will be a different story. We got to come out with that same mentality. We had a lot of days off due to the snow. I’m happy they came out with the right mindset.”
A 17-4 second quarter put the Knights ahead 46-12 at halftime, as their defensive play forced the Roughriders into hurried shots or turnovers. PA (3-10, 8-12) made just 17 of 49 field goals for the game, with nine baskets coming after the game was well out of hand.
After their game on Monday, the Knights will await where they will start in the West Central District playoffs. In all likelihood, they will get a first round bye and host a quarterfinal game on February 19.
“Hopefully we can win on Monday, and have that playoff game,” said
. “I think the community and the school deserves that type of atmosphere as a no. 1 seed. We have to be confident in what we’re driving for.”
