SEABECK – Though their record doesn’t reflect it, the Bremerton Knights have found their way into the post season.
Using a menacing defense, the Knights shut down the Olympic Trojans in a 64-29 league tiebreaker at Klahowya Secondary.
Even though their record is 6-13 will now advance to the Class 2A West Central District playoffs next week. They will need to win three straight loser out games to advance to the regional round.
“It’s crazy when you get some wind beneath your wings and you set sail,” said Bremerton coach Miah Davis. “I tell everybody we’re a week behind but now we’re picking up momentum. We’re well grounded now, we built our foundation going forward and everyone’s buying in. I’m not the easiest coach to play for, but our expectations are at a high level. When we see what we can do, great things can happen.”
Great things were happening in the first half, as their defense hounded the Trojans ball handlers and fought to grab every rebound.
“The coaches set the tone how we need to play going forward, so I’m very proud of them,” said Davis.
The Knights limited Olympic to just 18 percent field goal shooting (9 of 50), forced them into 18 turnovers, and outrebounded them 35-27. They held Oly to three field goals in the first half as they took a 33-12 lead at halftime.
The two teams split games during the regular season, each winning on their own home floor. Trento Bulmer scored 15 points in the first half to set the tone. At one point in the first quarter, he made field goals on three consecutive possessions.
“You have to know your opponents,” Davis said. My thing is to respect your opponents, learn what they do, watch film, understand their tendencies and take advantage of that. He did a good job of that.”
Samuel Tucker led Bremerton with 16 points, Isaiah Cadengo added eight points, and Trevon Pietz set the table with four points, four assists and seven rebounds. Oliver Christian had a game high 10 rebounds for his team.
Now the Knights will advance to the post season. They will know their first round opponent next week, and will begin playoff preparations.
“This is the best part of the year,” said Davis. “If you’re not excited about this, then you shouldn’t be in this locker room. This is what it’s all about, playing for something at the end of the season.”
