Players who usually didn’t see much action on the court during the season got to start on Senior Night for the Bremerton Knights and all contributed to the Knights’ regular season finale 67-59 win over the Kingston Buccaneers.
David Klega, Devonsei Johnson, and Angel Mejia, all seniors, started alongside fellow seniors Samuel Tucker and Trevon Pietz for Bremerton (5-9 Olympic League, 5-13 overall). Tucker led the Knights with 27 points, with 19 coming in the second quarter, and Pietz had an all around game with 12 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists. But the others made key contributions as well.
“That was what we wanted all year, everybody contributing,” said Bremerton coach Miah Davis. “Today was a prime example. We had our ups and downs but we came back in the second half. It was a great team effort. We have unsung heroes like David Klega that came up big with a three-point shot. It had the bench excited about playing. I told the coaches this is the most excited I’ve seen the boys on the court, on the bench and in the locker room. This was a great end to our last home game, but we’re on to bigger and better things.”
Klega, one of the shorter players on the court at five-foot four inches tall, nailed a key three-pointer in the fourth quarter that helped stave off a Kingston comeback in the late going.
Mejia scored all six of his points in the early going, including a pair of baskets in a 27 point second quarter for Bremerton. Johnson scored seven in the first half, including a first quarter three-pointer.
“Sometimes, when opportunity knocks,” said Davis, “you got to walk in the door, walk right in, surprise everyone, and let everyone know that you’re here.”
The little used seniors let the Buccaneers know they were there, as well as their own fans.
“Going into the post season,” Davis said, “we’re going to figure out who we’re going to take, get better in practice and be prepared as much as possible.”
Speaking of the post season, the Knights could be headed to the Class 2A West Central District playoffs as one of the last teams in.
“I always see myself as the half cup full,” Davis said. “I’m thinking we got more to prove, and I’m hoping we get the best result moving forward.”
