but have a good showing

Though it will go down as a loss in the ledger, the Bremerton Knights felt like as if they won their Olympic League game against league leader North Kitsap.

Despite losing 62-46 to the Vikings, the Knights felt good about their effort against the defending league champions who finished third at the Class 2A state tournament last year.

“I told the boys sometimes when you lose, you really win, and vice versa,” said coach Miah Davis. “Tonight, even though we lost, we won. Nobody knows what we go through on a daily basis on becoming a team.”

He continued, “With these guys, we have a lot of new parts to the puzzle; a lot of this is growing pains for us. We started to have a slow start to the season, but now, this game was a game I told them I was proud of them. I told them, now you realize your potential, and now you’re understanding yourself as a team.”

The loss dropped Bremerton to 2-4 in Olympic League play and 2-5 overall. The Knights didn’t see much action over the holiday break, as snow and ice caused games and practices to be cancelled during the month of December.

“This is only our seventh game,” Davis pointed out. “Lots of teams have twelve games under their belt, so, we’re behind the eight ball on that. We’re just getting into our groove now to where we know who we are and move forward from there.”

Though the Vikings led throughout the contest, they were constantly disrupted and swarmed over by the Knights on defense. The Vikings were never able to get into a flow offensively and dominate the game as they have in the past couple of seasons.

“We played defense the whole game,” said Davis, “We competed, played physical, and helped each other out, and communicated. Those are things we need to hammer out in practice. You can see tonight they started to believe in that and see what they can be. I just hope we can continue that.”

However, the Knights could not find their touch offensively. Despite having a number of open shots and opportunities off of turnovers, they only shot 33 percent from the field (19 of 56) and made only three of seven attempts from the foul line.

Samuel Tucker led the Knights with 17 points and seven rebounds while Isaiah Cadengo added 13 points, 11 coming in the second half.

“I told them I was proud of them because they stuck with the game plan on defense,” Davis said. “Sometimes the shots don’t fall, sometimes they do. I believe in the boys and I told them the shots will fall.”
