After waiting three weeks to play, the Bremerton Knights girls basketball season got underway in a season opener they would like to forget.
The Port Angeles Roughriders came into Eathorne Gym and had their way against the Lady Knights for the most part in a 46-25 Olympic League loss for the host.
It was the first action for the Lady Knights, who had a non-league game against Anacortes last week cancelled due to snow and icy conditions.
Without the non-league game, the Lady Knights jumped right into Olympic League play against the perennial league favorites.
The Roughriders immediately showed that they are the favorites again, jumping all over the Knights in the first quarter, jumping into the passing lanes and forcing them into 12 turnovers en route to a 16-2 lead, and built it to 30-9 at halftime.
“There were some jitters, but we worked through them,” said Bremerton coach Nancy Harris. “It took us a little bit to get started but for the most part. Our defense started to pull us together and that’s how we closed the gap.”
In the second half, the Knights began to swarm over the Roughriders on defense, challenging every shot, pass, and rebound.
“I put in smaller, faster girls,” Harris pointed out, “and it paid off a little bit.”
However, it still could not translate into points on offense, as most of their shots could not find the net against PA’s defense.
Anyssa Mejia led the Knights offensively with 12 points and pulled down nine rebounds, while Attianna Cabato had eight points and four steals.
The Knights will try to work things out for their next game against Sequim up on the Olympic Peninsula.
“We’ll talk about things to work on,” said Harris, “passing, rebounding, and just making good passes to each other on our pace.”
