The West High Wildcats, behind the record-breaking performance of Dan Shedwin, made their final home appearance a good cone, dropping the Central Kitsap Cougars, 84-68, Saturday night.

Shedwin, lanky 6-3 center, set a new school point-making standard as he pumped in 35 points before leaving the contest with 2:30 still to play.

Displaying his ability, Shedwin hit from both far and near but it was a hay-in with 2:42 showing that brought him the record. Teammate Ed Tabbaco drove into  the middle of the lad and fired a quick pass to Shedwin, who layed it up for his final two points of the evening.

The lanky pivot meshed 16 of 26 two-point tries.

It was the seventh victory against three losses for the ‘Cats along the class AA district tournament trail and leaves them in third player behind Port Angeles and East Bremerton.

The Cougars threw a scare into the West forces throughout the first period and held a 25-19 lead at the quarter’s end.

CK pivot Bruce Conn upped the difference to eight, 27-19, as the second panel began but that was to be the extent of the Cougar glory. For Shedwin, held to four points during the initial stanza, began to find the range. He accounted for nine tallies and paced West into the lead. High three-point play with 3:53 remaining knotted the count at 33-all.

Shedwin put his team ahead to stay, 38-36, with a rebound shot, and the Wildcats owned a 40-36 intermission lead.

West was able to pull away more in the second half as Shedwin received scoring help from Ken Burley. During the first semester it was Shedwin, Lonny Folger, Gary Chamberlain and Gary Gordon who did much of the scoring.

Folger, the ‘Cat floor general, connected for 12 of his 16 points during the initial 16 minutes.

It was only in the second half that Shedwin really began to zero-in on the point record. He twined five of seven field goal attempts durgin the third period while Burley meshed three of five, and the hosts were beginning to pull away. It was 62-52 going into the final stanza.

Burley finished with 14 counters.

Shedwin pumped eight times in the last eight minutes and swished six for his final total. He received valuable assistance from his teammates as they passed up shooting opportunities of their own to give Shedwin the shots.

CK’s big pivot, Bruce Conn, did his best to keep his team in the running as he accounted for 13 point at halftime but failed ot keep things going in the second semester. He finished with 21 to top Cougar point-makers.

Rick Jacobs and John Colby each contributed 12 and George Gordon 11 to the count.

A Conn basket just into the fourth quarter cut the difference to eight but the Wildcats took charge and pushed the lead up to as much as 20 points.

The loss rounded out the campaign for CK. The Cougars finished with a 1-11 double A record and a 7-13 season’s mark.

West closed regular season play tomorrow night meeting Capital League foe Bellarmine in Tacoma.

Roughriders Win Flip
For Top Olympic Spot

It wasn’t in the coins for the East High Knights this morning as the Knights lost a flip of the coin to the Port Angeles Roughriders and finished second in the Olympic League Class Aa tournament trail standings.

The flip was necessitated when PA defeated Shelton Saturday night, 57-46, leaving both the ‘Riders and Knights with identical 9-3 marks.

The deciding toss was conducted by the principals of the two schools involved and Jim Huey, Central Kitsap principal and member of the West-Central District board.

Huey, in Silverdale, had both Dwight Scheyer of East and George Ellis of PA on the telephone when he flipped the coin. Scheyer called tails and it came up heads in favor of PA.

A new problem arose today when Fife asked to have the district tourney site switched from that school. The Fife basketball team has gained entry into the State Class A State Tournament and Fife fans want to see the ‘A’ met instead of the ‘AA’ encounter.

Woodrow Wilson high School Tacoma will be the site of the playoff game between West and North Thurston, Huey announced.

East coach Les Eathorne is happy with the outcome. “We preferred it this way because we can play somebody new,” he commented. The Knights will tangle with the winner of the Curtis-Bethel playoff game for third place in the Seamount League. The latter two teams play Tuesday night at Fife.

Port Angeles will meet the South Kitsap Wolves at Central Kitsap Friday night while East meets the playoff winner at West.

West’s Wildcats encounter North Thurston at a site yet to be determined while the Olympic Peninsula’s No. 4 entry, Shelton, battles Sumner, the Seamount’s top quintet, at Franklin Pierce.

All games get underway at 8 o’clock.

Saturday night’s semi-finals in the single-elimination meet will be held at CK and Pierce. The winners of the PA-SK and NK-West games will mix at CK while the winner of the East game encounter be Sumner-Shelton victor at Pierce.

The District Tournament finals are scheduled for Tuesday, March 10. The site will be determined by the teams involved. The winner of the tourney gains a berth in the Region III tournament to be held in Longview March 13-14.

Both Sumner and North Thurston own 13-5 season records but the Spartans of Sumner finished atop league standings. Bethel is 8-10 while Curtis is 6-12.
