Poulsbo proudly opened a new North Kitsap High School in 1930, which sat on the site of what is now the Poulsbo Parks and Recreation Department.
The school previously had been known as Poulsbo High School (1919) and then Poulsbo Union High School (1920) when outlying districts were added. In 1930, Port Gamble, Kingston, Keyport, Hansville and other districts joined in, and the school officially became North Kitsap High School, and the school district, North Kitsap District No. 400.
While the school was a major achievement for the town, so, too, were the buses.
On Sept. 12, 1930, the local newspaper announced that new buses were in operation: "Ed Peterson is having the third new school bus built this year, the fifth school bus altogether. Chris Johnson, as usual, is doing the building, assisted by Mr. Olson of Lemolo. The new bus will have a capacity of carrying 40 passengers, and from the looks of it now, every inch of it is of sturdy construction, as are all the other busses that Mr. Johnson has built. The busses altogether have a capacity for carrying 200 passengers at one time, besides the use of one seven-passenger touring car."
North Kitsap High School today is undergoing a major construction project that is affecting almost all areas of the school. Students will find newly remodeled classrooms, but they also will have to eat lunch in two shifts near classroom wings where classes aren't in session until the construction is complete.
"We are hopeful, as are the construction folks, that there will be access to all buildings except the Commons when the teachers return on Aug. 27, and it will even be better when the students return on Sept. 3," said Kathy Prasch, principal. |
