Carr Drives Lincoln Past Wildcats

WILDCAT PLAY OPENS - Les Dicks, regular starting West forward who came on as a reserve last night because of injury suffered in accident the previous night, breaks by surprised check of Lincoln's Les Morse for field goal attempt while 'Cats Rod Johnson blocks off Abes' Bill Zindt during Capital league prep hoop contest, won by the Tacomans, 57-42.

Lincoln’s Aves had a Carr for a driver and he ran the West Wildcats off their own floor last night in the second half of a 57-42 Capital league conquest by the Tacoma invaders.

Carr, a high-jumping junior forward, scored 17 of his game-high 22 points in the second half after West had led at intermission, 23-18. Carr combines with all-sports star Dave Williams at the other forward to sweep both backboards like ne vacuum cleaners.

ONLY WILDCAT in double figures was Steve Schumacher, an injured knee in a brace, who opened at forward last night in place of Les Dicks who had been hurt in practice the previous evening. Schumacher tallied 11, seven in the first half.

A younger brother of former Tacoma athletic great Luther Carr, the newest high-powered Lincoln vehicle sank nine of 18 field goals attempts and added four straight free throws before missing his last chance.

West had fallen behind 5-1 at the outset. It wasn’t until four and a half minutes had been played that Ron Burley, on of two junior guards starting in place of senior regulars last night, stole a Lincoln pass and soloed for a lay-in that gave West its first field goal. Count then was tied at 5-5 and 7-7 before a pair of free throws by Williams gave the Abes a 9-7 advantage going into the second quarter.

THE WILDCATS then pulled up to one and went ahead by the same margin on a free throw and field goal by Schumacher. Three times the lead changed hands in the next 2½ minutes before West surged to a seven-point lead that was shaved to five just before halftime.

The tight first half, finally dominated by West, made the runaway second semester a little unbelievable. Up to the break, West garnered 10 field goals in 22 attempts while Lincoln, in almost constant possession because of its rebounding and early Wildcat turnovers, had assaulted the basket 30 time for a net of just six two-pointers.

Carr collected 10 points as the Abes streaked to 15 consecutive points and a 10-point lead before three free throws by center Dan Shedwin finally got the ‘Cats mildly started toward a comeback. There were only two minutes and 32 seconds left in the third period when Shedwin tallied West’s first point of the second half.

ANYTHING thereafter was anticlimactic.

Whatever hopes West may have had for a serious threat in the late stages was sacked when Shedwin drew his firth personal foul and the resultant benching with 41 seconds left in the third quarter.

Lincoln lost Williams with 4:17 to play and Schumacher bowed out with 0:36 on the clock. But neither later loss affected the outcome.

Carr picked up only seven points in the final eight minutes as the Abes, for the second straight period, outscored their hosts by 10 points. He tried only one more goal in the fourth quarter than he gathered in and his second half accuracy from the field was seven for 11.

Lincoln outrebounded West, 46-28.

PERCENTAGES for the game saw Lincoln net 18 of 53 goal attempts and 21 of 33 free throws to West’s 15 of 40 afield and 12 of 25 at the charity line.

In was the seventh win in the past eight outings for Lincoln, now leading the Capital league with 6-1 standard. Loss was the sixth in seven loop tilts for West.

The Wildcats conclude their Capital league schedule Tuesday, entertaining the Wilson Rams. Last game of the regular slate for West will send them to Central Kitsap March 1.

LINCOLN LIGHTNING - Dave Carr, only real thorn in West sides last night, towers over helpless Wildcat defenders for a short jump shot that helped build his 22-point total in leading the Abe Capital league triumph here. 3 Official Test
Said Successful

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – (AP) – Clutter up the basketball court with a third official and you’d only get more fouls, a cynic might say.

But three officials took the floor at yesterday’s Cal Poly-Pasadena college game and, believe it or not, no more whistles than usual blew.

“We had to run a lot less,” said referee Art Stobbe after Poly’s 72-66 victory. “I felt less tired after I left the game than when I started it. We were simply able to keep better positions.”

The three referees called 36 fouls. Two other games in in northern California yesterday averaged 37 fouls each.

One referee worked the baseline to the left of the basket, the second stayed halfway between the baseline and midcourt to the right of the basket and the third worked at midcourt.

There were no arguments and only one conflicting call – one official ruled a ball out of bounds, another called a jump.
