Wildcats Spank 'Riders; Bothell Upends Knights

Tamerius, Dicks Set Pace in 49-38 Romp

PORT ANGELES - West's Wildcats dominated the backboards and erupted on a 23-point final period scoring splurge to notch their initial conquest of the prep basketball season, a 49-38 nod over the Port Angeles Roughriders here last night.

The double-A tournament trail encourter saw coach Bob Smith's Wildcats used the 23-point explosion to overcome a 31-26 third period deficit and successfully launch their bid for an Olympic peninsula berth in the post-season state AA tournament.

J. D. TAMERIUS and Les Dicks supplied the two-fold punch which left the Roughriders reeling in that final-period wake.

Tamerius collected 11 of his game's high total of 17 in those last eight minutes, while Dicks' work off the defensive backboard (he had 18 rebounds in all for the night) generated the fast-breaking Wildcat attack which resulted in the victory.

All in all, West grabbed off 41 rebounds to the 'Riders 27 with Tamerius second to Dicks with 11.

As they did in their opening season loss to Mount Tahoma (50-53), the Wildcats got off and running at the start to establish a 13-8 first-period lead. But cold shooting thwarted them through the next  two panels and the 'Riders had 23-18 half-time and 31-26 third peiod leads.

THEN THE Smithmen, refusing to permit another last-quarter letdown as they experienced against Mount Tahoma, poured on the coal. Starting guard Leon Leslie and Jim Stockton, the latter a junior making his first varsity opening, were twice each on the scoring end of fast breaks started by the angular Dicks.

Coupled with Tamerius' tallies, the outburst was much too much for the host Roughriders to handle.

West played it almost entirely without veteran starter Steve Schumacher, still suffering from a shoulder bruise suffered in a fall during the Mount Tahoma game. However, Steve, in his brief playing time, contributed one key bucket to West's comeback drive.

Leslie, another veteran senior, followed Tamerius in the individual scoring with 13 while Dicks chipped in with nine.

BLAINE PEARMAN collected 'Rider high honors with 10 before fouling out shortly before the end.

Team-wise, the Wildcats fired 21 of 54 shots for 37.5 per cent, while the hosts hit 14 of 52 for 27.

Port Angeles junior varsity salved some consolation for the night's effort with a 53-36 preliminary game quest. Gary Gordon, one of three juniors on the 'Cat JV unit, led the scoring with 19, 17 of them coming in the opening half.
