Wilson, Mount Tahoma Cagers Score Win
T-Birds Grab Top Spot In Capital Race

The Captial League basketball lead belongs to Mount Tahoma and the Wilson.  High School gym individual scoring record is in the possession of Clover Park's Bob Wurster as a result of last night's season-opening contests.

Mount Tahoma upset West Bremerton 53-50 in Bremerton last night for the Thunderbirds first Capital League victory of the season. Wilson shaded  Clover Park, 54-48 in a non-league contest - at the Rams' home court.

Come-from-behind play was responsible for both victories by Tacoma prep teams last night  It took 10 straight points by junior Art Smith to overcome an 11 point West Bremerton lead in the second half. And, Gary Birchler ignited Wilson's offense in the third perior to overtake the Puget Sound League co-favorites in the final two quarters.

Wilson had built up a five-point lead midway through the second period before Wurster and Jim Pelander teamed up for six straight points to tie the g ame at 15-15. A momnetary advantage on Birchler's jump shot from the key was nulified when Wurster twisted through for two field goals and Barry Crust sandwiched a free thow to post a 20-17 half-time lead for Clover Park.

Three Point Advantage

The Warriors held the three-point advantage until Birchler cut it to 24-23 with a jump shot from the baseline and Butch Dunlap pumped in a 15-foot field goal to put the Rams in front, 25-24 with 5:00 remaining in the third quarter. Birchler hit again from the key to make it 27-24 and the Rams were never again headed.

A full-court press never allowed Clover Park to get its systematic offense operating and Wilson pulled ahead 37-28 when the third period ended. Four straight points by Jeff Hale provided the Rams biggest lead, 41-30, early in the fourth quarter.

Wurster finished with 29 points to erase from the Wilson gym record book the 28-point effort of Stadium's Charlie Williams in 1960 as the hightest one-game scoring output. Birchler led Wilson with 18, 10 of them coming on the firve straight field goals in the third perion. McKean had 13 and Hale 12 for the Rams.

Smith Scores 30

Smith scored 30 points for Mount Tahoma, giving him a tie with Bruce Nichols for the school single-game record. But Coach Don Moseid would gladly settle for the final 10; which brought the Thunderbirds their victory.

West Bremerton led throughout the game, piling up a 31-23 halftime lead and building it to 11 points midway in the third period. Mount Tahoma came back to trim it to 43-35 going into the fourth period.

The inability of West Bremerton to hit free throws in the second half proved its downfall. Mount Tahoma began closing in on the Wildcats and finally took its first lead of the night at 51-50 with 2:01 to play. Smith then put the game on ice with a pair of gift shots, his 10th stright point of the fourth period.

Smith, the 6-2 junior, had kept Mount Tahoma hot on the heels of West Bremerton in the final stanza, hitting a field goal to trim West's lead to 48-47 and following a Wildcat field goal with two free throws at 2:37 to make the score 50-47
