Three WA Boys AA Blue's score in double figures in win over visiting Chico Black |
BREMERTON, Wash. – The Warren Ave (WA) Boys AA Blue Knights added another tick to their win total with a comfortable 48-to-16 victory Wednesday evening (Feb. 21) over visiting Chico Black at Mountain View Middle School.
The victory, the Knights seventh-consecutive this season, further secured their position as the #1 team in the Kitsap Co. Pee Wee Boys AA Basketball Standings with three games remaining in the regular season.
The outcome was never in doubt from the opening tip, as Chico Black continues to look for their first win of the season.
Confident in the contests outcome, the WA players appeared more interested in adding to their individual assist tallies, repeatedly passing-up open shots to pass the ball to a teammate elsewhere on the court. In the end, starter D’Angelo Moore won this internal contest with a team-high 4 assists.
“We started out pretty slow,” said Head Coach Zach Triggs, “which gave a lot of time for the second-string, the bench players, to get significant playing time and work on their games.”
At the intermission the Knights led 25-to-10.
In the 2nd half coach Triggs kept the substitution door continuously revolving and all thirteen WA players saw fourteen or more minutes of action.
Since the players were focusing on non-scoring aspects of their game, no specific Knight had a standout game. Team-high scoring honors were spread between three players – Moore, Kimo Retome, and Kelo Logova - each accumulating 11 points. Forward Donavin Barrick followed with 6 points but did outperform his teammates on the glass with 10 total rebounds. Retome and Logova weren’t far behind with 8 boards each, as well as leading the team with 5 steals apiece.
With three-games remaining in the regular season, thoughts are beginning to turn to post-season action. WA Boys AA Blue are the defending Boys AA Champions. In 2017, the Knights ran the table and rang-up a perfect 17-0 record.
When asked about his team potentially becoming complacent with their success, coach Triggs explained, “when these guys kick it into gear it is really hard to beat them.”
How good the Blue Knights really are will be put to the test in the two weeks. Monday (Mar. 5) they will take on #2 Chico Red and then follow two-days later with a much-anticipated game against club rival WA Boys AA Gold on Wednesday (Mar. 7). Both games will be played at Mountain View Middle School and are scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
