BOYS BASKETBALL CAPSULES

-  Dec 9th, 1996

BAINBRIDGE

Coach — Jeff Eller

Last year's record — 9-15

Returning letterwinners — Greg Spooner (6-3, F, Sr.), Ben Ruder (6-0, G, Sr.), Adam Kornbau (6-0, G, Sr.), Brant Childers (6-0, G, Sr.), Shane Stenesen (6-3, G, Jr.), Ford Clary (6-1, F, Sr.).

Newcomers — Rob Lee (5-11, G, Jr.), Pat Lynn (6-5, P, Jr.), Matt Hervin (6-7, F, Jr.), Brett Schwager (6-3, F, Soph.).

Outlook — First-year coach Eller takes over a team that returns some proven experience — mostly at guard — from a team that reached the district tournament a year ago. There's some size to go with it. Eller's looking forward to the second-round of Olympic League games.

BREMERTON

Coach — Larry Gallagher

Last year's record — 13-7

Returning letterwinners — Kevin Hooker (6-4, 190, C, Sr.), Brian Kurzrock (6-4, 200, C, Sr.), Everett Williams (5-7, 160, G, Sr.), Anthony Lyons (5-9, 160, G., Sr.), Lars Anderson (6-2, 200, F, Jr.), Victor Davis (5-10, 170, G, Jr.).

Newcomers — Jarvis Henderson (5-10, 170, G, Sr.), Adam Augustyn (6-0, 215, F, Sr.), Joe Wilson (6-0, 190, F, Jr.), Kenny Jones (6-3, 185, F, Jr.), Miah Davis (5-9, 155, G, Soph.), Angelo Lundy (5-10, 165, F, Soph.).

Outlook — Should be fun to watch. There's a lot of athletic ability and quickness. Key will be Knights' ability to cash in on turnovers created by their press. Williams might be OL's most dangerous player.

CENTRAL KITSAP

Coach — John Sitton

Last year's record — 19-4

Returning letterwinners — Hayden Leroy (6-9, 190, C, Sr.), Curtis Patnode (6-1, 180, F. Jr.), Lamar Gregory (5-1, 140, G, Sr.), Troy Kelly (6-0, 170, G, Sr.).

Newcomers — Nate Coxon (6-6, 185, F, Jr.), Scott Miller (6-0, 180, F, Sr.), Kyle Welling (6-1, 175, F, Sr.), Connor Robbins (6-0, 165, G, Jr.), Omar Sweet (6-2, 180, F, Jr.), Ryan Rodriguez (5-9, 150, G, Jr.).

Outlook — Loss of 6-11 Luke Arthur because of disciplinary action was a big blow to the defending co-champion Cougars, who lost four starters to graduation. Kelly, a top golfer, can put the basketball in the hole, too, but he's been slowed by an ankle injury.

CHIMACUM

Coach — David Porter

Last year's record — 9-11

Returning letterwinners — Jake Johnson (6-1, Jr.), Bret Huntingford (6-4, Sr.), Andrew Dodd (6-1, Sr.), Ryan Martin (5-9 Sr.), Beau Hadley (5-8, Sr.)

Newcomers — Tyler Colton (5-9 Soph.), Shane Stewart (6-1, Soph.), Tyrell Marlow (5-8, Soph.), Phil Hayes (6-5, Sr.), Jake Bowling (6-2, Sr.), Nathan Taylor (5-10, Sr.)

Outlook — There's reason for optimism. The returners, led by the explosive Johnson, are solid and the sophomores should be able to contribute.

KING'S WEST

Coach — Rick Walker

Last year's record — 9-12.

Coach's record at school — 49-37

Returning letterwinners — Dale Burden (6-0, 181, Sr.), Josh Foss (6-0, 180, Sr.), Scott Johnson (5-7, 180, Sr.), Tyler Kuske (6-1, 170, Sr.), Brian Thompson (6-1, 175, Sr.), Josh Morse (6-2, 175, Jr.).

Newcomers — Grant Mericle (6-1, 155, Sr.), Bryce Gaines (6-0, 140, Jr.), Bobby Armentrout (5-9, 133, Soph.), Aryn Morell (6-0, 172, Soph.), Mark Taylor (5-10, 149, Soph.), Luke Walker (6-1, 167, Soph.)

Outlook — Good senior leadership and experience, combined with improved outside shooting and quickness, could carry the Warriors to its best season. The younger players are very athletic.

NORTH KITSAP

Coach — Jim Harney

Last year's record — 6-15

Returning letterwinners — Mario White (5-9, 160, G, Sr.), Jeff Carlsen (6-6, 220, P, Sr.).

Newcomers — Steve MacLean (6-3, 200, P, Jr.), John Foster (6-2, 190, F, Sr.), Todd Hildebrand (6-2, 210, F, Jr.), Nick Hartman (6-4, 180, F, Sr.), Brian Krasowski (6-2, 185, F, Jr.), Harlow Wood (5-8, 150, G, Soph.), Chuck Evenson (6-5, 220, P, Jr.), A.J. Fugitt (5-8, 150, G, Jr.), Eric Guyll (5-8, 150, G, Jr.).

Outlook — Will be competitive with Carlsen, but there's not a lot of experience here. Quick Wood shows signs of being a solid point-guard and Vikings have decent size.

NORTH MASON

Coach — Brian Roper

Last year's record — 18-9

Returning letterwinners — Gabe Cagwin (5-9, 150, G, Jr.), Nathan Jensen (6-5, 220, C, Sr.).

Newcomers — Paul McArthur (6-4, 170, F, Sr.), Carl Peters (6-5, 180, F, Jr.), Jon Kiser (5-11, 165, G, Soph.), Jeff Reynolds (5-10, 175, G, Jr.), Casey Reynolds (6-4, 180, F, Soph.), Corleone Harang (6-0, 165, G, Jr.), Kevin Roberson (5-11, 150, G, Jr.).

Outlook — Young, enthusiastic group led by Cagwin, who scored 41 and 27 points in first two games, might be better than advertised if they can keep mistakes to a minimum. Roper has turned this program around.

OLYMPIC HIGH

Coach — Les Eathorne

Last year's record — 9-11

Returning letterwinners — Brian Farman (6-4, 210, C, Sr.), Corey Manchester (6-3, 175, F, Sr.), Josh Nelson (6-3, 170, F, Sr.), Willie Randklev (5-10, 145, G, Sr.), Kurtis Stalter (6-0, 175, G, Sr.), Tim Schaaf (6-0, 165, G, Sr.).

Newcomers — Eric Boyer (6-4, 220, C/F, Sr.), Jeff Fairbanks (6-0, 175, G, Jr.), Bill Martin (6-2, 180, F, Sr.), Josh Reese (6-1, 180, F, Jr.), Alfred Rogers (6-1, 175, G, Sr.), Mike Williams (6-6, 215, C, Sr.).

Outlook — Balanced Trojans have better than average size, pretty good quickness and have had a year to get used to Eathorne's system. Manchester could emerge as one of the league's top offensive players.

PORT ANGELES

Coach — Lee Sinnes

Last year's record — 20-4

Returning letterwinners — Jon Madison (6-6, 175, F, Sr.), Michael Haney (6-4, 195, F, Sr.), Tony Rickel (6-4, 200, P, Sr.), Tony Burke (5-11, 175, G, Sr.), Wes Ochs (6-0, 155, G, Sr.).

Newcomers — Eric Smiley (5-10, 165, G, Jr.), Ryan Dewey (6-4, 200, P, Soph.), Will Berger (6-2, 180, F, Sr.), Chris Baker (6-1, 165, G, Jr.), Brandt Warder (6-3, 190, P, Sr.), Jacob Wood (6-2, 180, F, Jr.), Matt Elwood (5-10, 160, G, Jr.).

Outlook — PA has won or shared Olympic League championship three years in a row and experienced Roughriders, with four starters back, are heavy favorites to do it again. Smiley gives Riders solid play at point-guard, allowing Burke to move to off-guard. Madison could be OL's top player. Haney and Rickel aren't afraid to mix it up. No glaring weaknesses.

PORT TOWNSEND

Coach — Tim Black

Last year's record — 4-16

Returning letterwinners — Abe Fox (6-8, 190, C, Sr.), Simon Jaynes (6-1, 160, G, Sr.), Rodney Sydnor (5-10, 170, G, Sr.), Eric Laughlin (5-9, 155, G, Sr.), Matt Klontz (6-2, 170, F, Jr.), Justin Lyon (6-2, 160, F, Jr.), Brett Black (5-10, 150, G, Soph.), Josh Fountain (5-10, 190, G, Soph.).

Newcomers — Salem Young (6-2, 210, F, Jr.), Ed Black (6-4, 220, C, Jr.), Austin Paul (6-1, 150, F, Soph.).

Outlook — Black takes over after assisting for 10 years at PT. Fox, a top player, will be playing inside more than he did a year ago, and there's enough talent around him to make Redskins, 1-13 a year ago, a threat for top AA honors.

QUILCENE

Coach — Terry Washington

Returning letterwinners — Aaron Vandenburg (6-5, 215, C, Sr.), Tom Baker (6-0, 205, F, Sr.), Ryan Newman (6-2, 185, F, Jr.).

Newcomers — Tom Borges (6-0, 165, G, Soph.), Scott Shea (5-7, 185, G, Sr.), Alan Smith (5-11, 155, G, Jr.), Brian Vandenburg (6-4, 185, F, Soph.), Daniel Hamilton (6-0, 210, F, Jr.), Joe Corey (6-1, 160, F, Sr.), Bill Newman (5-10, 160, G, Sr.), Rick O'Connor (5-10, 185, G, Jr.), Eric Monroe (5-11, 165, F, Soph.), Jason Martinson (6-0, 150, G, Jr.).

Outlook — Rangers are confident they can make some noise in the post-season this year. Newcomers give Quilcene depth it hasn't had in years.

SEQUIM

Coach — Larry Hill

Last year's record — 9-14

Returning letterwinners — Aaron Bratonia (5-8, 145, G, Sr.), Ben Shamp (6-3, 175, F, Sr.), Chad Jacobs (6-1, 180, S, Jr.), Shane Royal (6-5, 200, C, Sr.).

Outlook — Wolves will be most inexerienced team in the Olympic League. There's some quickness, Royal offers a physical presence and Hill is a respected coach, but it'll take time for Sequim to develop.

SOUTH KITSAP

Coach — Chris Olsen

Last year's record — 12-8

Returning letterwinners — Eric Brooks (6-0, 170, G, Sr.), Dave Johnson (6-1, 170, G, Sr.), Kolby Wright (6-5, 200, Sr.).

Newcomers — Marc Smith (5-6, G, Sr.); Mike Curtis (6-0, G, Sr.); Scott Kolar (6-3, G-P, Jr.); Jim Keene (6-0, G, Sr.); Brandon Cartmill (6-3, G-P, Sr.); Adam Smith (6-4, P, Sr.); Chad Dahle (6-4, P, Sr.).

Outlook — Wolves have decent size and strength up front, are scrappy on defense but need someone to step up and take over at guard if they hope to contend for one of the Narrows League's three playoff spots.
