MV Girls Varsity get third win of the season
at Klahowya

SILVERDALE, Wash. – It wasn’t the Mountain View (MV) Girls Varsity’s best offensive performance of the season. It was actually their lowest. But it was enough Thursday (Feb. 16) at Klahowya Secondary School to get a 31-to-20 win over the Eagles.

With four games remaining in the West Sound Middle School Girls League the Lady Squires have put together a 3-and-3 record (.500) and are tied with the Curtis Cougars for 4th place in the Southern Division standing.

In 2017, the MV Girls Varsity did not win a single game.

“Are success today was teamwork,” said first-year Head Coach Rob Shauger. “Everyone got a lot of minutes today, which kept up fresh, and our defense was nice.”

After giving up 12 points and trailing by 3 (9-to-12) in the 1st quarter, Mountain Views defense got better and better as the game progressed. They limited the Lady Eagles to just 4 points in the 2nd quarter, 3 points in the 3rd, and a single point in the 4th and final period.

Together the Lady Squires defense generated 19 steals, which they converted into a season-high 7 points. Point guard Brooklyn Irvine alone accounted for a team-high 7 steals.

Mountain View utilized their size advantage and controlled the board through the game. Collectively the Squires pulled down a season-high 10 offensive rebounds in the 1st half alone, eighteen for the game, led by starting forward Madison Gardner’s 8 offensive boards. Together with her 8 defensive rebounds, Gardner led the team for the fifth consecutive game in rebounding, with 16 total rebounds.

Klahowya was the first opponent this season not to full-court press the Lady Squires. Which significantly reduced Mountain View’s ball-handling turnovers and permitted them to execute their offense at their pace.

Behind a team season-high 57 field goal attempts, Gardner led all Squires with 8 points, followed by Irvine with seven, and reserve forward Tulip Carter with 6 points.

Also worth noting were Carter’s back-to-back free throws to open the 2nd quarter. The quick charity strip points pulled the Squires back to within two of Klahowya and got Mountain View’s offense rolling. By halftime the Squires led 22-to-19 and never looked back.

“Without a doubt this has been a rebuilding year for Mountain View Girl Basketball,” coach Shauger added. “The coaches and I have worked hard on team bonding and it is beginning to show.”

With no games on the schedule next week, the Lady Squires will suit-up again on Tuesday (Feb. 27) at home against the Hawkins Huskies.
